Fromagerie Sophie is a European-inspired cheese shop with a fabulous selection of cheese from all over the world; as well as artisanal charcuterie, pâtés, and specialty accoutrement.
It is our greatest pleasure to watch people discover cheese as they travel on a global sensory journey from the walls of our shop.
In a welcoming, European-inspired environment, our customers travel on a tasting journey through an international collection of cheese. We want to establish our artisan shop as a must-visit destination in San Luis Obispo, with guests becoming cheese connoisseurs under our guidance as the Central Coast cheese experts.
We search the globe for products that aren’t available in most stores because they are crafted according to old fashion standards and traditions. We seek out and collect these artisanal products from European countries, and also revered American favorites, sharing them with our customers. We like to say we offer the travel experience without the jet lag.
We start every day excited to experience the pleasure of seeing someone’s face light up when they taste a great cheese for the first time. The way their eyes sparkle and the corners of their mouth turn into a smile is a perfect moment for us. We want more guests to know and understand everything we love about cheese.
OUR BEGINNINGS
Fromagerie Sophie began during a Christmas trip to Paris celebrating Paul’s 50th birthday when our passion for cheese evolved into a business. During this trip we admired the daily habits of Parisians strolling in and out of local markets, patisseries and boulangeries. Their lifestyle inspired us to start a fromagerie in San Luis Obispo uniting the place we love with the culture we cherish.
The idea for our shop was born in Paris where we were inspired to re-create that experience in our community of San Luis Obispo. We treasure the old world traditions and the Parisian culture that slows down to enjoy eating cheese and sharing great wine. It was with these goals that we wanted to bring the best cheeses we can find to other cheese lovers. We offer many American cheeses and products, but Europeans have been making cheese for centuries so they have a bit more practice.
In 2013 we opened our doors to provide locals and tourists with cheeses and treasures from around the world. We carry between 60 and 80 cheeses at any time from the U.S. and from nearly a dozen European countries. We search for the best taste, quality and story in everything we select. The same is true for our curated retail products which also come from around the world.

OUR MISSION
We want to bring the old-world charm and culinary sensibility of our family experiences in France and Croatia to the community we love in San Luis Obispo. We take our customers on a virtual tour of the world through fabulous cheeses and artisanal products. We believe those small moments which start in our shop help to bring people together as they enjoy the simple pleasures of life; including fabulous and simple foods, conversation, relaxation and love.
